View From the Pits at Bonneville 2006

8/13/05 Leaving at 3:30 A.M, Lee, Vince and Laura Moellman, and Keith Stamp from Australia arrived at Wendover, UT. (Keith runs a hot rod roadster out of Melbourne, Australia.) Quite a contingent of 15 Roamin' Angels made the trip to join in the festivities of Speed Week.
Lee's lil' red race car passed technical inspection in only 10 minutes this year. Yahoo! Racing starts at 8:00 tomorrow morning.
8/14/06 Vince passed his Rookie license clocked at 147 mph! Lee said the motor's running strong and conditions are perfect (nothing like a Richard Farmer motor to stick you in the seat!).
8/15/06 Lee qualified for the long course after running the car at 178 mph (at least 190 from the three to four-mile). "It was a helluva ride!" There's lots of interest in the lil' red race car.
8/16/06 Racing was cancelled today due to high winds on the Salt. Lee and Vince waited second in line for 5 hours, but get to keep their spot for tomorrow.
8/17/06 Vince drove 149 mph, but missed qualifying for his C license by only 1 mph. The lil' red racer's distributor clamp shook loose due to vibration during Lee's run, so his speed was 156 mph. Tomorrow's the last day to hit the mark for this year's Speed Week trials -- Lee and Vince will go for it again.
8/18/06 Lee made a final run in the morning after making repairs. He said the car left good, charging hard to the two-mile. Then it layed down again due to suspected fuel starvation, shut off for 2006. All in all, a good meet. They accomplished two goals: Vince off rookie status and Lee on long course over 175 mph! Car tracks and behaves; Bonneville is a waiting game and atttention to detail is important for success. Winter project for lil' red racer is already in the works (secret!).
The new record holder in C/GR from New Zealand gave the car the once over and made positive comments as to construction and appearance, "Should be on his tail soon." The Rolling Bones Hot Rod shop from New York gave the car a two-hour going over with notes, photos, and queries to build a car similar to lil' red racer. They were very impressed as was Lincoln Harris of New Zealand. Nice bunch of guys and dolls will be in touch during construction. Finally, a big thanks to all the Roamin' Angels who showed up for support and help during Speedweek 2006! Quite a gathering of car enthusiasts from Nevada County, so until next year, thanks and let's go out and do it again in 2007.--Lee
